What does Benefiscent mean?
The name Benefiscent is inspired by the word beneficent, which describes something 'resulting in good'. Our core mission is to raise money and awareness for underfunded cancers through the sale of our handmade candles. Our goal is to create a high quality product that brings our customers joy and allows them to do something good through their purchase!
How are Benefiscent candles ethically made?
First and foremost, 20% of our sales are donated to cancer research. We are founded on the principles of social responsibility because our founder believes that businesses have the power to make a big difference! Our candles are handmade with love in our candle studio, using the safest materials possible and limiting the use of plastics in every way possible. Our candles are vegan and cruelty-free!
What organizations do you donate to?
As of 2016 we have a donating partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, one of the best cancer hospitals in the world. This organization is our first partnership because the inspiration story for Benefiscent began here (read more). We are in the process of developing partnerships with other reputable cancer organizations to expand our mission!
What ingredients are in your candles?
1. We use 100% soy wax to make our candles. Soy wax is not only safer for you than paraffin, but it also supports soy farmers in the US!
2. Our fragrances are proprietary blends of fragrance oils and essential oils. All of our fragrance oils are paraffin-free, phthalate-free, and proposition 65 compliant!
3. Our candle wicks are 100% cotton and do not contain any zinc or lead.
How big are your candles?
We know it is difficult to grasp the size and feel of a candle online, so, here is our best description.
Our petite sized candles are 7oz by volume. This is about the size of a half pint mason jar (not so small!). This candle has a burn time ~35hrs and perform best in powder rooms or bedrooms rather than large open spaces.
Our classic and blue candles are 10oz by volume. The burn time is ~45+ hrs for these candles.
Our 3-Wick candles are 16oz by volume and burns for 75+ hrs. This size candle is perfect for larger open spaces or for an extra cozy experience in any room.
What does Benefiscent do to be environmentally friendly?
The main ingredient in candles is wax! So we make sure to support farmers and clean breathing by using soy wax instead of paraffin which supports the petroleum and plastic industries. Our glass containers are recyclable or easily repurposed after you finish your candle! Additionally, we chose to use pine wood lids instead of non-recyclable mixed materials or plastic. Our tea light tester candles are made out of recyclable metal instead of commonly used plastic tea-lights.
We strive to eliminate the use of single-use plastics wherever possible. All of our packing materials are either reused packaging from our raw goods or they are recyclable! So, if you receive bubble wrap packaging, know that we are reusing in addition to reducing our plastic use and recycling. Our popcorn poppers are made of cornstarch and will easily dissolve in water. We make sure never to purchase bubble wrap or plastic padding, and we opt for recyclable/ compostable kraft paper packing instead.
What is your shipping policy?
As soon as we receive your order, we will start processing it. As soon as the items for your order are ready to ship, you will receive an email saying your order has been fulfilled. Depending on several factors, our order processing lead time may be within hours or up to 4-7 days. Once your order has shipped with USPS, or UPS you should receive tracking information automatically. Most orders ship USPS 2-day and USPS priority mail depending on the physical size of your order.
Shipping costs vary, depending on the physical weight of the items you purchase, we do our best to keep shipping prices fair. As of November 2021 we are offering free domestic shipping on orders over $30 to the continental United States! Exclusions may apply in rare circumstances or for bulk and wholesale orders, contact us for wholesale pricing.
Additionally, if your delivery address is within a certain distance of our NY based candle studio, you will have the option to select 'local delivery' at checkout. We will deliver your order to your door!
Shipping prices with all major carriers go up around the holidays!
What do I do if my candle arrives broken?
Firstly, we are very sorry! Please take photos of the exterior package and the damaged product inside and send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com right away. We will work with you to find the best solution and make sure you get a new candle. Our shipping partners sometimes handle our packages more indelicately than we would like.
If we do not receive photos and notification of damage in time to file a damage claim with the shipping provider, you may be asked to pay for the cost of shipping your replacement.
What do I do if I entered the wrong shipping address?
Please contact us ASAP! If you are able to contact us before your order is packed and shipped, we will be able to correct your address fairly easily. In the case that your order is already in transit or has shipped to the incorrect address, unfortunately we will need to wait for your package to be returned to our studio by the mail service. Please note the timing of this return is entirely out of our control. Once we receive your package, we can either resend it to you or refund your order in full less the original cost of shipping. The customer will be responsible for the additional cost of shipping the item again.
What is your return policy?
We stand by the quality of our candles as we design and hand-pour them all in-house at our candle studio. Our priority is the happiness (not just satisfaction) of our customers. That is why we have a 100% happiness guarantee! We will work with you to make sure that we arrive at the best solution on an individual basis. We are proud to say that 100% of our customers to date have loved their candles!
However, in the case that you are not satisfied with your order, please contact us within 2-weeks of receiving your order. We ask that you regift or empty and recycle your candle rather than return it as these products cannot be resold. If you have an issue with a non-candle item such as a wick trimmer, wick dipper, rechargeable lighter, or greeting card we will accept returns on items that are in unused condition. Additionally, as a Benefiscent customer, please keep in mind that a percentage of your purchase is a non-refundable donation to cancer research.
